[AU] two worlds, a lot of demons, and a new set of problems

It's still hard to believe it's over; that the yellow-eyed demonic bastard they'd spent their whole lives hunting is finally dead.

Sam figures it'll sink in eventually. Given everything else -- right now he's still pretty numb.

He's also desperately tired, but that doesn't matter. There's something he needs to do, and he can't afford to delay.

He waits until they've settled in for the night, and then waits still longer. Once Dean's been asleep for half an hour, Sam picks up his messenger bag -- already stuffed with books and his computer -- and heads straight for the bar.

He orders black coffee and snags a table with a good view of both doors and the stairs, then pulls out the first of the old texts and starts to search through it.

There's work to do.

"Well... I was going to go see the blacksmith," she muses.

"And I'm starting to think I shouldn't do that without backup."

"If you don't know what this blacksmith's connection is to the problem witch you're already worried about, then I'd say you really should have backup with you," Sam agrees. "If not me, then someone."

She considers, and instantly rejects, asking Deputy Haught to go along with her. "Even better if that backup has some experience with this stuff," she points out. "Well... I don't want to pull you away from what you're doing..."

"Don't worry about it. I offered, didn't I?" He closes his laptop and shoves it in his messenger bag, then picks up the pile of books and notes. "Let me just stash these in my room."

A thought strikes him and he adds, "Come along if you want. It's across from Wynonna's, so you can see where she is."

"Oh? Okay."

She grabs the skull and stands, then reaches down for her mug of tea, and lifts it to him with a little smile before finishing it off. "Waste not."

Sam smiles back, a little amused, and tips his head toward the stairs. "This way. There's not much logic in the room structure up there, I'll tell you now, but the signage is pretty good."

He's careful to keep pace beside her rather than stretching his legs.

He's taller than both Doc and Dolls, and she's grateful he doesn't walk as fast as he could and make her scurry to keep up. "Good to know."

She glances up at him as they walk. "Is your brother here now too?"

"No, he's back at the motel." He nods down the hallway as they reach the top of the stairs and starts in that direction. "He was already asleep when I decided to swing by."

"Do you need to let him know you'll be going to another world?" Waverly asks. "He's never even met me. I could be a, an axe murderer, or something."

Sam gives her a sideways look. “Do you always tell Wynonna where you’re going to be?”

"Well, I did get kidnapped by revenants that one time..." she muses.

"So I try to."

“You got kidnapped by revenants?” He opens the door to his room and goes in to set his things on the bed.

"Right after Wynonna came back."

She leans against his doorframe, crossing her arms over her chest. "They brought me to the homestead and strung me up over the drive with a stool to stand on and a rope around my neck. Bait for the heir."

His jaw sets hard. ”Did she get them all?”

Guilt twists his gut. He shouldn’t have let Jake get behind him. If he hadn’t, Dean would be - he wouldn’t have—

"Not all. But enough."

She presses her lips together, tipping her head against the jamb. "And we made the homestead safe again. No revs can come onto the property, now."

“Good.” Sam sighs, thinking. If he wakes Dean up now, he’s going to want explanations. A lot of them. And if something were to go wrong…

“I guess I better let him know.”

Waverly smiles at him like she's Jiminy Cricket and he just decided to live life right. "Good idea. I could come, if you want? Help explain things."

“Um.” Sam looks across the hall at Wynonna’s door, then back at Waverly. “That’s going to be quite an explanation,” he says, awkwardly. “You sure you want to do that?”

"I should tell her I'm bringing you back, anyway," she says, reasonably. "So I may as well kill two birds with one stone."

Sam blows out a breath and resigns himself. “Okay. Which one first?”

"Mine's right across the hall," she points out, and turns to take the few steps needed to knock on the door – loudly. "Wynonna!" she calls. "Wake up!"

There's a second, and then a muffled curse from inside. A moment later, the door cracks and Wynonna stares blearily out. Waverly gets one whiff of her breath and blows out her own, waving her hand in front of her face. "Hello to you, too, sleepy head."

Sam tips his head back in an awkward nod of greeting. “Hi. Met your sister.”

Wynonna frowns at him, and Waverly steps in. "Sam's coming back to Purgatory with me," she says. "To look for some things. But we have to talk to his brother first. We'll just nip over to the motel and back and then straight home."

Her sister makes a hoarse sound and peers at Sam. "Just to the motel?"

“Just the motel,” he promises. “It’s safe there. Dean’s the only one around.”

Wynonna nods and reaches to sleepily pat Waverly's hand on the door. "Be a good girl and bring him home by nine," she says, and retreats back into the darkness.

Waverly shuts the door and shakes her head. "I hope she makes it back to the bed."
