[AU] two worlds, a lot of demons, and a new set of problems

It's still hard to believe it's over; that the yellow-eyed demonic bastard they'd spent their whole lives hunting is finally dead.

Sam figures it'll sink in eventually. Given everything else -- right now he's still pretty numb.

He's also desperately tired, but that doesn't matter. There's something he needs to do, and he can't afford to delay.

He waits until they've settled in for the night, and then waits still longer. Once Dean's been asleep for half an hour, Sam picks up his messenger bag -- already stuffed with books and his computer -- and heads straight for the bar.

He orders black coffee and snags a table with a good view of both doors and the stairs, then pulls out the first of the old texts and starts to search through it.

There's work to do.

"Well, when you put it that way... no." Fair's fair. He doesn't have to like it. And it's not like there's an extra risk.

"More like we're dealing with the aftermath of someone opening a gate to hell. In Wyoming."

"I mean, I guess Wyoming seems like as good a place as any for a gate to hell."

She makes a face, annoyed. "Great. So someone kicked open the door. How many demons are we talking about?"

Sam grimaces. "Couple hundred. Maybe more."

[pacificator]

Wynonna grimaces back, forcing it into a smile that lacks any warmth or humor. "Cool."

The bitch of it all is that he was right, before. Even without the curse, she knows what the right thing here to do is.

But she's so close. She sucks at her teeth, frustrated, the offer tugging out of her like she regrets even thinking it. "Look, I can't leave Purgatory right now. I'm – I have to find one more demon. Cross him off the list. Then maybe I can take a break."

The very act of offering to help seems physically painful. "Come give Peacemaker a workout in the wider world."

Sam stares at her in stunned shock before a slow grin splits his face. "You mean it? Because I sure as hell won't turn you down, if you do."

[pacificator]

"Yeah, well, don't cream your shorts just yet."

She reaches into a pocket and draws out a photo: seven men standing with their hunted prize – an eighth man hung from a beam by his ankles like a hog for slaughter. Six of the faces are crossed out in red marker. Wynonna sets the photo down and taps the last unmarked face. "I need to get him, first."

He takes a close, careful look at the guy she's after. "The rest your work already?" he asks, while studying the image. "Seven of your seventy-seven, or what?"

[pacificator]

"The Seven."

Hunters. Killers. Making sport of the curse and her family's pain. Her jaw tightens. "See that man hanging from the cross bar?"

Her glance never leaves Sam's face. "That's my Daddy."

"Oh, shit." Sam touches the image gently, then looks up at her. "Fuck. Wynonna, I'm so sorry."

[pacificator]

They didn't kill him beats at the back of her teeth. She swallows it down and takes the photo back, stuffing it carefully in her pocket.

"One more. And then the Seven will be back in Hell where they belong."

"Won't be a moment too soon." He debates with himself for a second, but only that.

"My brother killed the demon that got our dad, and our mom before that. With the Colt." Very, very quiet, but clear. "It helped. It helped a lot, to know... when it was done. Just so you know."

[pacificator]

"Good."

She says it with the finality of an axe coming down, and lifts her glass. "To revenge?"

In answer, Sam lifts his glass and clinks it against hers. "Revenge it is."

[pacificator]

She knocks her glass against his and takes a swallow, then breathes out through her nose.

"But after. I mean... the revenants aren't going anywhere. They're stuck in the Triangle. And, like you said, it's not much use having a demon-killing gun that only one person can use if that person's not there to use it."

"They're stuck? Like, in a devil's trap?" he asks, wanting to be clear. "Colt make one of those for you there, too?"

[pacificator]

"What? No, it's part of the curse. They're locked into it just like I am."

She empties her tumbler and sets it down. "Waverly could explain this better than me... The revenants are bound to the Triangle. If they cross the border, it's like hell on Earth for them. Literally. They burn, and it ain't quick."

A flicker of disgust crosses her face. She's still not sure she's forgiven Doc for his hand in that torture. "They can't get out."

“So you’ve got close to — how big is your triangle?” Sam shakes his head. “You help us, we help you, by the way. It’s only right.”

[pacificator]

"Pretty big."

Not that there's much in it, aside from the plains and Purgatory and the Pine Barrens and the badlands. "From the Rockies almost to Calgary. And down across the border."

“Pretty big, all right.” Sam taps his fingers against the glass and takes another swallow.

“Where’d the curse come from, anyway?”

[pacificator]

"Well, if I were a betting woman, I'd say ol' Wyatt pissed off a demon or two in his time as a lawman."

She unscrews the cap of the bottle and pours again, shaking her head. "Waverly is looking up what she can. But we don't know. Not the details."

“I mean, seems likely,” Sam agrees. “You don’t get a weapon like that without a reason. And Colt was one hell of a hunter.”

[pacificator]

"Kinda makes you wonder if the other four Buntlines are demon-killing heirlooms, too."

She glances down at Peacemaker in her boot, frowning. "You guys only have the one, right? And it's not a Buntline?"

“Only the one that I know of.” Sam frowns, considering. “Not a Buntline, no. Older. A Paterson model. But Wyatt Earp’s known, so who’s to say Colt didn’t make more than one weapon?”

[pacificator]

"I'll ask Waves about the other four. See if there was anything supernatural about any of them."

She breathes deep and lets out a thoughtful exhale. "This door that got opened. Is it closed again?"

“It is now.” Sam sounds both grim and certain.

“It was at the center of a devils trap Colt made out of railroad lines with a church at each of the points. The gun was the key to the gate.”
