[AU] two worlds, a lot of demons, and a new set of problems

It's still hard to believe it's over; that the yellow-eyed demonic bastard they'd spent their whole lives hunting is finally dead.

Sam figures it'll sink in eventually. Given everything else -- right now he's still pretty numb.

He's also desperately tired, but that doesn't matter. There's something he needs to do, and he can't afford to delay.

He waits until they've settled in for the night, and then waits still longer. Once Dean's been asleep for half an hour, Sam picks up his messenger bag -- already stuffed with books and his computer -- and heads straight for the bar.

He orders black coffee and snags a table with a good view of both doors and the stairs, then pulls out the first of the old texts and starts to search through it.

There's work to do.

And that's exactly why making assumptions can bite you in the ass. Sam just nods. "Probably just as well. Keeps him from looking over your shoulder when you're off the clock."

As much as people like them can be, anyway.

[pacificator]

"There's a clock?" she says, wry. "We can get off it?"

"Rumor has it," he says, equally wry. "Didn't work when I tried once, though. So probably not."

[pacificator]

"Yeah."

She sets the sole of her boot on the rung of her chair, lounging. "I ran as far as I could from the damn curse. But it wasn't any good."

In the silence that follows that statement, the waitrat runs up and squeaks at them. Sam looks at Wynonna. "Want anything to go with the whiskey?"

[pacificator]

"Tequila?" she suggests.

[gavemea_45]

Sam eyes her. "Going for the triple threat? Jim, Jack and Jose?"

[pacificator]

"Oh, you know them, too?"

She cants her head and grins, sharp. "Those're my boys."

[gavemea_45]

"Yeah, I'm real familiar," Sam drawls, and looks at the rat. "You heard her. Add coffee to that, and, uh, something to snack on, I guess. Whatever looks good."

He hadn't known it was possible for a rat to eyeroll.

[pacificator]

"Definitely snacks," Wynonna says, and leans back in her chair to call after the rat. "And brownies!"

The rat squeaks over its shoulder as it runs off, and Sam has to laugh. "You roll with the punches, don't you?"

[pacificator]

She clucks and gives him a fingergun. "Though I prefer to be throwing 'em."

[gavemea_45]

“You should meet my brother,” Sam tells her. Maybe he can get Dean to come in again sometime soon. “You two are a lot alike.”

[pacificator]

"Oof."

Wynonna chuckles, rocking her chair back on two legs. "That bad, huh?"

[gavemea_45]

“I figured it was a good thing.” Sam eyes her curiously.

[pacificator]

"Yeah."

She sucks her teeth and shakes her head, all wry self-deprecation. "Sweetie, there's no universe where 'being like Wynonna Earp' is a good thing."

“Well, I guess there must be, because I like Dean,” he counters, stubbornly.

[pacificator]

Her smile flickers, pressing into her cheeks for a second. If she's like his brother, then maybe it's not so surprising that he keeps reminding her of Waverly.

"Tell me about him?"

[gavemea_45]

“What do you want to know?” It’s not that he’s unwilling, he just isn’t sure how to start.

[pacificator]

She shrugs, slight.

"What's something you like about him?"

[gavemea_45]

“He’s always got my back,” Sam tells her, even as something twists deep in his gut. “No matter what. He’s great with kids. And really committed to keeping people safe.”

[pacificator]

She nods, fiddling with her glass.

"Your big brother, yeah?"

[gavemea_45]

Sam nods. “Yeah.”

[pacificator]

"Yeah."

Her mind goes not to Waverly, the little sister she's trying so damn hard to protect, but to the big sister she should have had. Willa. "Must be nice."

[gavemea_45]

“Most of the time. Don’t get me wrong, he can be a jerk, but not when it counts.”

Sam glances back at the notes. There has to be a way to save Dean. There just has to.
