[AU] two worlds, a lot of demons, and a new set of problems

It's still hard to believe it's over; that the yellow-eyed demonic bastard they'd spent their whole lives hunting is finally dead.

Sam figures it'll sink in eventually. Given everything else -- right now he's still pretty numb.

He's also desperately tired, but that doesn't matter. There's something he needs to do, and he can't afford to delay.

He waits until they've settled in for the night, and then waits still longer. Once Dean's been asleep for half an hour, Sam picks up his messenger bag -- already stuffed with books and his computer -- and heads straight for the bar.

He orders black coffee and snags a table with a good view of both doors and the stairs, then pulls out the first of the old texts and starts to search through it.

There's work to do.

"I'll ask Waves about the other four. See if there was anything supernatural about any of them."

She breathes deep and lets out a thoughtful exhale. "This door that got opened. Is it closed again?"

“It is now.” Sam sounds both grim and certain.

“It was at the center of a devils trap Colt made out of railroad lines with a church at each of the points. The gun was the key to the gate.”

[pacificator]

She makes a low sound of frustration. "You'd think they'd stop making keys to these things," she points out. "Why build a gate with that much protection and then make a key to it?"

But it's not like she can go back in time and shake an answer out of Colt himself. "How about you, you have help? Back up?"

“Me and my brother. And a friend - kind of like an uncle,” Sam tells her. “We work with other hunters sometimes, too, depending.”

“I don’t know why he made it the way he did. I figure he must have had a reason, though.”

[pacificator]

"Nothing like a ragtag team to try and avert the end of the world, am I right?"

She taps a finger on the table. "And these demons, they probably didn't all stick around Wyoming, huh?"

“I wish.” God, he sounds bitter, even to himself. “No, they scattered in all directions. Some of them are pretty powerful, too. More than usual.”

[pacificator]

"Because why make it easy?" Wynonna mutters, more to herself than to him.

"Found any yet?"

[gavemea_45]

He looks even more sour. “You know the deadly sins, right? Turns out each one’s got a super-strong demon that can cause them.”

[pacificator]

"Oh, come on. That's not right."

He looks sour; she sounds petty and annoyed. "But why, though. Isn't it bad enough just dealing with the sins themselves?"

[gavemea_45]

"Sure is. But thing is, these jerks get off causing the sins to overwhelm human victims. They killed one guy I knew by forcing gluttony on him and making him drink a bottle of drain cleaner," Sam informs her. "Isaac was a good man, and a good hunter. He never had a chance once they got hold of him."

[pacificator]

Wynonna makes a face: ew. "Gross," she says, then grimaces at herself. "Also, uh... sorry. About your friend."

Saved it. "I mean, I'm all for a little gluttony and lust, but that seems excessive."

Black Badge is so damn secretive that she's not sure she'd be able to find out anything even if they do know about this, but – "Chances we're from the same world are pretty slim," she muses. "But I'll ask Waverly to look into this demon shit. If there's something to find, she'll find it."

[gavemea_45]

"Even if we are, we may not be coming in here from the same time," Sam points out. "But yeah, probably not, or else I figure you'd have noticed a giant influx of demons from south of you."

[pacificator]

"Actually, I wouldn't have."

She cants her head to the side, lips pursing. "The Ghost River Triangle doesn't just keep the revenants in. It also keeps everything else out. So unless it popped up on the news..."

Wynonna shrugs.

[gavemea_45]

"Everything?" He doesn't let himself get his hopes up, because it's so unlikely as to be almost impossible, but ... if he can't find another way to help Dean, maybe he can stash his brother in Wynonna's Ghost River place to protect him.

Just in case.

"Pretty impressive."

[pacificator]

"Yeah, I think so."

She makes a mental note to check that with Waverly, too. And Dolls. "I mean, don't get me wrong, we've got plenty of shit to deal with already. But nothing new gets past the border."

[gavemea_45]

"There's no way to break that border of yours, is there?" Sam asks. "We thought the gate was protected until they ripped the railroad line apart."

[pacificator]

"I don't know. Probably some way, but fuck if I know what it is."

Every border can be crossed eventually, right? "But it probably has something to do with the curse."

[gavemea_45]

"Seems likely." Sam picks up his glass again and toys with it, eyeing her carefully. "Five generations, huh?"

[pacificator]

She nods. "Wyatt," she says, counting them off. "Josiah. Edwin, the One-Year Wonder. Ward. Wi – "

Wynonna cuts herself off, hard. "Me," she says, instead, bearing down on the word like she's trying to tattoo it into reality.

He’d have had to be deaf not to catch that slip, but it’s obvious she doesn’t want to talk about it. Sam doesn’t push. “Okay.” He gives her a wry smile. “Guess we’re just gonna have to see that you break it.”

[pacificator]

"I like that 'we.' Very solid. Very confident. Good stuff."

She wrinkles her face up and gives him a wry look. "Sorry about the – before. Peacemaker. By the way."

“It’s okay. Given what you’re dealing with, I get it,” Sam assures her.

[pacificator]

"Still. Kinda rude."

And there's definitely something weird about him. Peacemaker wouldn't react that way just to someone who'd been marked, especially if the demon in question had already been vanquished, would it?

She looks down at his papers and books, and moves some aside so her glass isn't resting directly on them. "Although you can never be too careful, right?"

“Being careless — or too trusting — is a great way to get killed.” Something about his tone and expression is grimly certain.

“So it’s okay. Really. As long as you don’t start pointing your gun at me again.”

[pacificator]

She laughs and lifts her glass to him in a wry salute. "Cupcake, nobody has ever accused me of being too trusting."
