[AU] two worlds, a lot of demons, and a new set of problems

It's still hard to believe it's over; that the yellow-eyed demonic bastard they'd spent their whole lives hunting is finally dead.

Sam figures it'll sink in eventually. Given everything else -- right now he's still pretty numb.

He's also desperately tired, but that doesn't matter. There's something he needs to do, and he can't afford to delay.

He waits until they've settled in for the night, and then waits still longer. Once Dean's been asleep for half an hour, Sam picks up his messenger bag -- already stuffed with books and his computer -- and heads straight for the bar.

He orders black coffee and snags a table with a good view of both doors and the stairs, then pulls out the first of the old texts and starts to search through it.

There's work to do.

Waverly smiles at him like she's Jiminy Cricket and he just decided to live life right. "Good idea. I could come, if you want? Help explain things."

“Um.” Sam looks across the hall at Wynonna’s door, then back at Waverly. “That’s going to be quite an explanation,” he says, awkwardly. “You sure you want to do that?”

"I should tell her I'm bringing you back, anyway," she says, reasonably. "So I may as well kill two birds with one stone."

Sam blows out a breath and resigns himself. “Okay. Which one first?”

"Mine's right across the hall," she points out, and turns to take the few steps needed to knock on the door – loudly. "Wynonna!" she calls. "Wake up!"

There's a second, and then a muffled curse from inside. A moment later, the door cracks and Wynonna stares blearily out. Waverly gets one whiff of her breath and blows out her own, waving her hand in front of her face. "Hello to you, too, sleepy head."

Sam tips his head back in an awkward nod of greeting. “Hi. Met your sister.”

Wynonna frowns at him, and Waverly steps in. "Sam's coming back to Purgatory with me," she says. "To look for some things. But we have to talk to his brother first. We'll just nip over to the motel and back and then straight home."

Her sister makes a hoarse sound and peers at Sam. "Just to the motel?"

“Just the motel,” he promises. “It’s safe there. Dean’s the only one around.”

Wynonna nods and reaches to sleepily pat Waverly's hand on the door. "Be a good girl and bring him home by nine," she says, and retreats back into the darkness.

Waverly shuts the door and shakes her head. "I hope she makes it back to the bed."

“She’ll make it,” he says, with confidence. Even if not, it’s still better than the alley she’d mentioned before.

“My turn, I guess. We have to go back downstairs first.”

Waverly gestures with a jaunty hand toward the stairs, beaming.

Another world. How cool is that? "Lead the way!"

He does exactly that, bringing her to the front door. “The way this works is that you can go through with someone to their world, but they have to open the door for you,” he explains. “You can’t open the door to other worlds yourself. Anyway, when we go through, I’ll have to wake Dean up. Stay by the door until I do, okay?”

Waverly nods, focused and ready. "Okay. I'll follow your lead."

Hoping he’s not making a mistake, Sam opens the door and steps inside, then waits for Waverly to follow him in. He shuts the door quietly and switches on the nearby lamp.

“Dean. Wake up.” The lump under the blanket that’s his brother growls something suspiciously like “Sammy, shut up or I will end you I swear.”

She hangs back but looks around, unable to keep from taking in every nuance of this terrible motel room in another world. As the person under the covers shifts, she glances at Sam, but keeps her mouth shut.

“We have company,” Sam says. “I’m, uh, going to swing by her place and help her look for something. Just thought you should know.”

The lump stills, then sits up. Dean shoves the blanket down and gives Sam an incredulous stare. “Run that by me again?”

Sam waves a hand at Waverly. “Company,” he explains. “Dean, this is Waverly. Waverly, my brother Dean.”

"Oh!"

Dean.

Is not wearing a shirt. "Um – "

Waverly turns to the side and holds up a hand to block her own view, not wanting to embarrass him. Bad enough to wake him up in the middle of the night. She lifts her other hand high enough over her head to wiggle her fingers in a wave. "Hi, I'm Waverly."

"Uh, hi." Dean gives the chick a startled look as she turns shyly away, then turns that look right back on him. "You didn't--"

"No," Sam grits out. "I couldn't sleep, so I went to the bar to do some research. That bar."

"So why're you waking me up now? There a problem?" Dean demands.

"Not exactly," Sam hedges. "Waverly lost something. I'm going to help her look for it. She was worried you'd be worried if I didn't let you know, first."

"Look, it's my first time there," Waverly points out. "I'm not totally clear on multiversal visiting etiquette yet. But it seems like something you'd want to know, considering."

"Considering?" Dean asks. Sam sighs. "They're a hunting family. That world's version, anyway. And..."

He was going to have to tell him anyway, given Wynonna's offer. Sam braces himself. "Waverly's sister has a gun that's like the Colt."

That wakes Dean up all the rest of the way, and fast. "You got demon problems?" he demands. Before Sam can speak, his brother orders, "Not you. I wanna hear what she has to say."

"Well, it is a Colt," Waverly points out, before risking a glance over her hand. He's still shirtless in bed, but it could be worse. She glances at Sam, then answers Dean. "Yeah."

She turns to face him, the hand that had been lifted dropping to her side, the other, holding the skull, coming into view. "Well, revenants. But they're a kind of demon... I think."

"You think?" Dean sounds strangled.

"Different worlds," Sam reminds him. "Also, they're Canadian."

"Is that why she's carrying around a skull?" Dean wants to know.

"Because I'm Canadian?" Waverly asks, blank.

"Well, is it?" Dean tosses back at her. As he does, he rolls out of bed and reaches for the clothes he'd left draped over the back of the nearby chair.

"Do you think Canadians just carry around skulls?" she asks, gesturing with it at him. "You know, just in case we have to perform a monologue from Hamlet at the drop of a hat, or something? No."

The skull gazes at him, empty and disapproving. "And the revenants are demons... or demonic, anyway. They resurrect and have to get sent back to Hell by the Earp heir. It's a whole thing."
